Texas girls flag football has been building toward something. On June 13 and 14, it arrived.

The Dallas Cowboys and Houston Texans hosted the inaugural Girls Flag Football Texas State Championship at DATCU Stadium on the campus of the University of North Texas in Denton. Eight high school programs from across the state competed over two days for a title that had never been awarded in Texas before. GameBreaker equipped the athletes on the field throughout the entire event.

What Happened

Day one brought eight teams into two pools: one from the Cowboys' league, one from the Texans'. Programs had made their way from Houston, Dallas, Austin, and El Paso, including Eastwood and El Dorado, two teams that traveled 10 hours by bus just to compete. The level of play matched the commitment. Diving catches, deep throws, and physical flag pulls were routine. These athletes came ready.

Day two came down to a Dallas vs. Houston final. Rockwall-Heath against Houston Memorial. The Lady Hawks trailed early before rallying behind quarterback Haley Harper, who threw two touchdowns on the day and was named team MVP. Freshman Laurelea Carlyle put it away in the final seconds with a pick-six, giving Rockwall-Heath a 25-6 win and the first state championship in Texas girls flag football history.

“The first Girls Flag Texas State Championship Tournament was a huge success. We are excited to see the growth of the sport across our state, and appreciate Gamebreaker supporting this movement.” — Brett Stewart, Director of Youth Football Development

A Sport at a Turning Point

The Cowboys and Texans didn't build this overnight. Together, they've helped establish more than 200 scholastically-based varsity programs across Texas, all while pushing toward UIL sanctioning, the step that would make girls flag football an official Texas high school sport.

That push is gaining real traction. Following the championship, the UIL Athletics Committee announced it will develop an implementation plan to add girls flag football as a sanctioned activity and survey superintendents statewide before making a final recommendation.

Nationally, the picture is just as strong. The NCAA added women's flag football to its Emerging Sports for Women program in January 2026, opening a path to collegiate scholarships and championship competition. More than 500,000 girls ages 6-17 now play across the country. The sport is set to debut at the 2028 Summer Olympics. The pipeline from Texas high school to college to national team is more real today than it has ever been.

Where GameBreaker Fits

Flag football is fast, physical, and competitive at every level. The athletes who showed up in Denton are serious competitors who deserve gear built specifically for the game they're playing.

That's what GameBreaker has always been about. The Aura, custom flag belts, and mouth guards aren't adapted from another sport. They're built for this one. For the athlete who is sprinting, cutting, and competing at full speed in a game that is growing faster than anyone anticipated.

The inaugural Texas State Championship is one more proof point. The sport is here. The athletes are here. The infrastructure is being built around them.
