The NFL franchise is expanding its girls flag football investment statewide, and GameBreaker AURA headbands are part of every kit.

The Washington Commanders announced this week they are extending their girls flag football platform to 51 new high school programs across Virginia, bringing their total supported teams to 102 in the Commonwealth and 178 across the DMV region. As part of that expansion, the Commanders will provide GameBreaker AURA protective headbands to every high school girls flag football player in Virginia.

This is the first time an NFL team has committed to outfitting an entire state's high school girls flag football population with protective headgear, and AURA is the headband they chose.

Virginia's flag football growth comes at a pivotal moment. The Virginia High School League (VHSL) is currently considering recognizing girls flag football as an official championship sport, following similar moves already made in Maryland and Washington, DC. The Commanders launched their girls flag platform last August with 127 supported teams. One year later, that number has grown to 178, with AURA now standard equipment for every Virginia participant.

The Technology Behind AURA

AURA headbands have been independently tested by the Virginia Tech Helmet Lab and earned a 5-star safety rating. The headband uses D3O technology to help reduce the risk of impact-related injuries, while staying lightweight and maintaining full peripheral vision, which matters in a fast-moving, non-contact sport where visibility and speed are everything.

Dan Levy, the Commanders' Director of Youth Football, pointed to how quickly the sport is scaling as the driver behind the expanded investment in player safety and community programming.

What's Included

Every one of the 178 supported programs across the region receives:

  • Financial support for their program

  • 25 custom Nike uniforms

  • An NFL Flag Kit (50 flags, 10 footballs, instructional materials)

  • Access to Commanders-hosted clinics, season kickoffs, and championship celebrations

And now, every Virginia athlete steps onto the field wearing AURA.
